What Does It Mean To Be Board Certified When Selecting An Attorney?

If you are starting the divorce process in North Texas it is important to obtain a board certified family lawyer for your case. According to the Holmes and Rahe stress scale, going through a divorce is rated the second most stressful event in people's lives. You don't want to add, " Is my lawyer qualified?" to your list of things to worry about if you find yourself going through a divorce. Board certification is one way to make sure your lawyer is qualified to help you get through this process in the best possible way. What does Texas Board Certified in family law mean? The Texas Board of Legal Specialization states, " Board Certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. Within the Texas legal community, Board Certification means an attorney has substantial, relevant experience in a select field of law as well as demonstrated, and tested, special competence in that area of law." There are more than 100,000 attorneys licensed to practice in Texas. Only 7,350 are Board Certified. According to the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, only 900 are certified in family law. The requirements for being Board Certified in family law in Texas are stringent. You must have practiced law already for five years and with a minimum of three years within the area you are seeking board certification in. A lawyer must pass an evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges first and then take and pass a six-hour written certification exam.
